Connection Closed By Remote Host

Connection Closed By Remote Host

Problem

Cannot log in via ssh and get "ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host".

Solution

The message is most often caused by too many failed login attempts from your IP address, resulting in your IP address being blacklisted.

Lodge a support request at the Pawsey support portal or help@pawsey.org.au stating:

  • which resource you cannot log in to (e.g. setonix.pawsey.org.au, data-mover.pawsey.org.au).
  • your username. Never email your password.
  • the time at which you last received the error.
  • the IP address you are trying to connect from (if you know it).

Blacklisting IP addresses after repeated failed logins is a security measure to prevent brute force attempts to gain access to our resources.
